Birth certificates in Virginia
Virginia makes this part easy. Certified copies of Virginia birth certificates are sold at every DMV customer service center, and most eligible customers leave with the certificate in hand. If the DMV cannot find or print the record, it forwards your application to the Virginia Department of Health, Division of Vital Records, which mails the certificate. You can also order by mail from the Division of Vital Records in Richmond.
The state has birth records from January 1853 to December 1896 and from June 14, 1912 to the present. The certificate fee rose to $15 on July 1, 2026. You may order your own certificate or one for immediate family: a parent, current spouse, child, brother or sister, with valid ID. Details are on the Virginia DMV vital records page.
