Getting a passport in Vermont

Vermont is one of the few small states with its own State Department passport agency, in St. Albans, near Burlington. Most Vermonters still apply for a first passport at a post office or a town office. For urgent travel you can book an appointment in St. Albans or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. Our Vermont city pages cover Bennington and Montpelier, and this page explains each option and how easy Vermont makes birth certificates.

Acceptance facilities in Vermont

Apply in person at an acceptance facility for a first passport, a child's passport or a replacement for a lost or stolen passport. In Vermont these are mostly post offices and some town offices. The city pages above list facilities in Bennington and Montpelier, and the State Department's facility search covers the rest of the state.

Take Form DS-11 (do not sign it in advance), a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID and a photocopy, and one passport photo. There is a State Department fee and a separate facility fee.

Birth certificates in Vermont

Since July 1, 2019, any town clerk in Vermont can issue a certified copy of any Vermont birth certificate, wherever in the state you were born. Each certified copy costs $10. You can also order from the Vermont Department of Health, Vital Records, or online through the state's vital records ordering service and have it mailed anywhere in the U.S. The state has records from 1909.

Copies are limited to people with the right relationship to the person named, as listed on the application, and you need a photocopy of a valid ID. The Vermont online vital records service lets you order without visiting a town office.
