Getting a passport in Rhode Island
Rhode Island has no State Department passport agency, but Providence is about an hour from the Boston Passport Agency. Most Rhode Islanders apply for a first passport at a post office or a city or town hall. For urgent travel you can book an appointment in Boston or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. Our Rhode Island city page covers Providence, and this page explains each option.
Acceptance facilities in Rhode Island
For a first passport, a child's passport or a replacement for a lost or stolen one, you apply in person at an acceptance facility, usually a post office or a city or town office in Rhode Island. The Providence page above lists facilities nearby, and the State Department's facility search covers the rest of the state.
Bring Form DS-11, filled in but not signed, a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. There are two fees: one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility.
The Boston Passport Agency
The Boston Passport Agency is the closest State Department agency for Rhode Island, about an hour from Providence. It sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. Bring proof of travel. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Rhode Island
If you were born in Rhode Island in 1960 or later, any city or town hall in the state can issue your certified birth certificate. For earlier births, go to the clerk in the town where you were born or where your mother lived, or to the state Center for Vital Records, which has moved to Simpson Hall, 6 Harrington Road, Cranston, and is open by appointment. The state charges $22 for the first copy and $18 for each extra copy bought the same day.
Rhode Island birth records are confidential for 100 years. Certified copies go to the person named, parents listed on the record, siblings, a legal guardian or someone with a court order, and you need a photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. Details are on the Rhode Island Department of Health vital records page.
