Passport Offices and Expedited Passports in Ohio
Ohio has no State Department passport agency yet, although one is being built in Cincinnati. Until it opens, Ohioans apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office or a county clerk of courts office, and travelers in a hurry use an out-of-state agency or a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page lists acceptance facilities in 25 Ohio cities, explains each option, and shows why Ohio is one of the easiest states for getting a birth certificate.

Passport acceptance facilities
Acceptance facilities take first-time applications, children's passports and replacements for lost or stolen passports. Many county clerk of courts offices and post offices in Ohio accept passport applications, often by appointment. Your city page above lists the facilities nearby.
For the appointment, bring Form DS-11 unsigned, proof of U.S. citizenship such as a certified birth certificate, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. The application fee is paid to the U.S. Department of State and the execution fee to the facility.
The nearest passport agencies
Today the closest State Department agency for most of Ohio is the Detroit Passport Agency, about an hour from Toledo. From Cleveland, the Buffalo Passport Agency is a similar drive. The State Department began building a Cincinnati Passport Agency in January 2026, so check travel.state.gov for its opening date. Every agency sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.

Birth certificates in Ohio
Ohio makes this simple. Any city or county health department in the state can issue a certified birth certificate for anyone born in Ohio from 1908 on, and many issue it the same day in person. Most local health departments charge $25 per copy. You can also order from the Ohio Department of Health, or online through VitalChek, which adds a fee.
Ohio birth records are open, so you do not need to prove a relationship to the person named, although you will fill out a request form. A hospital souvenir certificate is not an official birth certificate and will not work for a passport. Details are on the Ohio Department of Health ordering page.

Is there a passport office in Ohio?
Not yet. A Cincinnati Passport Agency is under construction. Until it opens, the nearest agencies are in Detroit, Buffalo and Chicago, and everyone else applies at an acceptance facility or renews by mail or online.
Can I get my Ohio birth certificate at any health department?
Yes. Any local health department in Ohio can issue a certified copy for a birth anywhere in the state from 1908 on, and many do it the same day. Most charge $25.
Can I renew my passport online in Ohio?
Online renewal is a national State Department service, so Ohio residents follow the same rules as everyone else. It is meant for adults renewing a regular passport who are not traveling soon. If your trip is close, an agency appointment or a registered courier is faster.
Which passport agency is closest to Cleveland?
