Getting a passport in North Dakota
North Dakota has no State Department passport agency, and the nearest one, in Minneapolis, is several hours from most of the state. Most North Dakotans apply for a first passport at a post office or a county office, and travelers short on time often use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas instead of making the drive. Our North Dakota city pages cover Fargo and Minot, and this page explains each option.
Acceptance facilities in North Dakota
You must apply in person at an acceptance facility for a first passport, a child's passport, or to replace a lost or stolen one. In North Dakota these are mostly post offices and county offices. The city pages above list facilities in Fargo and Minot, and the State Department's facility search covers the rest of the state.
On the day, bring Form DS-11 without signing it, a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID and a copy, and a passport photo. There is a State Department fee and a separate facility fee.
The Minneapolis Passport Agency
The closest State Department agency for North Dakota is the Minneapolis Passport Agency, about three and a half hours from Fargo and roughly seven from Minot. It sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in North Dakota
North Dakota birth certificates come from the Vital Records Unit of the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services at the State Capitol in Bismarck. Each certified copy costs $15. Requests are generally processed within three to five working days, and you can order by mail or in person at the Capitol. Records from 1870 to 1920 are incomplete, so older births may take extra searching.
You must send or show proof of identification before a certified copy is issued, such as a driver's license or other government photo ID. The Vital Records Unit only issues certificates for births that happened in North Dakota. Details are on the North Dakota Vital Records website.
