Getting a passport in New Hampshire
New Hampshire is home to the National Passport Center in Portsmouth, a State Department office that takes urgent appointments, so Granite Staters with a close travel date have an agency inside their own state. Most people still apply for a first passport at a post office or a city or town clerk's office. A registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas is another option. This page covers 18 New Hampshire cities and explains each option.
Acceptance facilities in New Hampshire
A first passport, a child's passport or a replacement for a lost or stolen passport means an in-person visit to an acceptance facility. In New Hampshire that is often a post office or a city or town office, and many book appointments. The city pages above list the facilities near you.
Take Form DS-11 without signing it, a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. You will pay a fee to the U.S. Department of State and a separate fee to the facility.
The National Passport Center in Portsmouth
The National Passport Center sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. From Nashua and the southern tier, the Boston Passport Agency is also close. Bring proof of travel to the appointment. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in New Hampshire
If you were born in New Hampshire in 1935 or later, any city or town clerk in the state can usually issue your certified birth certificate, not only the clerk in your birthplace. Older births come from the town where the birth happened or from the state Division of Vital Records Administration in Concord. The search fee is $15 and includes one certified copy, and each extra copy of the same record ordered at the same time is $10.
New Hampshire vital records are private for 100 years after a birth. A certified copy goes only to someone with a direct and tangible interest, such as the person named or immediate family, and you must show a photo ID. The City of Claremont vital records page sets out the statewide rules.
