Getting a passport in Nebraska
Nebraska has no State Department passport agency, and every current one is several hundred miles from Omaha, though a Kansas City agency is planned. Most Nebraskans apply for a first passport at a post office or a county office. For urgent travel you can book an out-of-state appointment or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. Our Nebraska city pages cover Omaha and Offutt Air Force Base, and this page explains each option.
Acceptance facilities in Nebraska
For a first passport, a child's passport or a replacement for a lost or stolen passport, you apply in person at an acceptance facility, usually a post office or a county office in Nebraska. The city pages above list facilities in the Omaha area, and the State Department's facility search covers the rest of the state.
Bring Form DS-11 (sign it only when asked), a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID and a photocopy, and one passport photo. There is a State Department fee and a separate facility fee.
The nearest passport agencies
From Omaha and Eastern Nebraska, the Minneapolis Passport Agency is the closest today, roughly six hours away. The State Department plans a Kansas City Passport Agency, which will be much closer for Omaha and Lincoln once it opens. Every agency sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Nebraska
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Vital Records, has birth records from late 1904. Each certified copy costs $17. You can apply in person at the Vital Records office in the Nebraska State Office Building in Lincoln, by mail with a check or money order, or through the state's own online ordering system. In the Omaha area, the Douglas County vital statistics office also issues Nebraska birth certificates.
Nebraska issues birth certificates to people who meet a proper purpose, such as the person named or a parent, and you need a current photo ID. If you request a parent's record, include your own birth certificate to show the relationship. Details are on the Nebraska DHHS vital records page.
