In detail

Getting a passport in Montana

Montana has no State Department passport agency, and every current one is several hundred miles away, so preparation matters. Most Montanans apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office or a county clerk of district court's office. For urgent travel you can fly or drive to an out-of-state agency or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page covers 9 Montana cities and explains each option.

Acceptance facilities in Montana

First passports, children's passports and replacements for lost or stolen passports all start with an in-person visit to an acceptance facility. Across Montana that is often a post office or a county office. Your city page above lists the facilities nearby.

Bring Form DS-11 (unsigned), a certified birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. Two fees are due: one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility.

The nearest passport agencies

From Missoula and Kalispell, the Seattle Passport Agency is the closest. From Billings, the Colorado Passport Agency in the Denver area is nearer. Both are long trips. The State Department plans a Salt Lake City Passport Agency, scheduled to open by 2028, which will be closer for Southwest Montana. Every agency sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.

Birth certificates in Montana

You can request a certified Montana birth certificate in person at the Office of Vital Records in Helena or at any county clerk and recorder's office, or order by mail or online through VitalChek. The state's fee is $16 per certified copy, as of September 2024, and county offices set their own fees. The state has birth records from late 1907.

Montana limits who can receive a certified copy. Step-relatives, in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins and ex-spouses are not eligible, and you must show ID. An informational copy, which anyone can get for a birth more than 30 years ago, is not valid for a passport. Details are on the Montana Office of Vital Records birth and death certificate page.
