Birth certificates in Minnesota
Minnesota makes this convenient: any county vital records office in the state can issue a certified birth certificate for anyone born in Minnesota from 1935 on, and many issue it over the counter while you wait. Births before 1935 are held by the county where the birth took place. The Minnesota Department of Health, Office of Vital Records, also issues certificates. A certified copy costs $26, and extra copies of the same record cost $19.
To get a certified copy you must have what Minnesota law calls a tangible interest, for example being the person named, a parent, a spouse or another close relative, or a legal representative. Mail requests need a notarized signature. Minnesota no longer issues long-form birth certificates. The state's birth certificate request form lists everyone who qualifies.
