Getting a passport in Idaho
Idaho has no State Department passport agency, and the nearest ones are a long way off, so planning ahead matters more here than in most states. Most Idahoans apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office or a county clerk's office. For urgent travel you can book an out-of-state agency appointment or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page covers 7 Idaho cities, explains each option, and explains why a birth certificate can take weeks in Idaho.
Acceptance facilities in Idaho
Acceptance facilities take applications for first passports, children's passports and lost or stolen replacements. Many county clerk offices and post offices in Idaho accept passport applications, some by appointment. Your city page above lists the facilities nearby.
Bring Form DS-11 (leave it unsigned until the agent tells you to sign), proof of U.S. citizenship such as a certified birth certificate, a photo ID and a photocopy of it, and one passport photo. You pay the application fee to the U.S. Department of State and an execution fee to the facility.
The nearest passport agencies
From Coeur d'Alene and North Idaho, the Seattle Passport Agency is the closest. From Boise and Southern Idaho, every current agency is a long drive or a flight away. The State Department plans a Salt Lake City Passport Agency, scheduled to open by 2028, which will be much closer for Southern and Eastern Idaho. Every agency sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Idaho
Idaho birth certificates come from the Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics in Boise, which has records from 1911. Each certified copy costs $16. The bureau has no public counter, so you order by mail or online through VitalChek, its official partner, which adds a processing fee. The state lists about 3 to 5 weeks for standard orders and 2 to 3 weeks with rush service, which costs an extra $10, plus mail time.
That timing is the key point for travelers: if your trip is close and you do not have a certified birth certificate, order it with rush service right away. Certified copies go to the person named, immediate family as defined by Idaho law, a legal representative, or anyone with a court order. Details are on the Idaho birth certificate ordering page.

No. The Seattle Passport Agency is closest for North Idaho, and a Salt Lake City Passport Agency is planned for 2028 at the latest. Until then, Southern Idaho residents face a long trip for an agency appointment.
The state lists about 3 to 5 weeks for standard orders and 2 to 3 weeks with rush service, plus mail time. There is no walk-in counter at the state office, so order early.
Yes, if you are eligible. The State Department's online renewal works the same in every state and is meant for adults renewing a regular passport who are not traveling soon. If your trip is close, an agency appointment or a registered courier is faster.
