Getting a passport in District of Columbia
Washington, DC has its own State Department passport agency, so District residents with urgent travel can book an appointment right in the city. Most people still apply for a first passport at a post office or another acceptance facility. A registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas is another option when appointments are hard to get. Our DC city page covers Washington, and this page explains each option and how to get a DC birth certificate.
Acceptance facilities in District of Columbia
First-time applicants, children and anyone replacing a lost or stolen passport apply in person at an acceptance facility. In DC these are mostly post offices, and many book appointments. The Washington page above lists the facilities in the District.
On the day, bring Form DS-11 unsigned, a certified birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. The application fee goes to the U.S. Department of State and the execution fee to the facility.

Birth certificates in District of Columbia
DC birth certificates come from the DC Health Vital Records Division, which has birth records from 1874. Each certified copy costs $23. Walk-up service is available at DC Health's new headquarters near the Anacostia Metro station, and residents can often leave with the certificate the same day. You can also order by mail, or by phone or online through VitalChek, which adds a processing fee. DC issues only the certified long-form birth certificate.
DC birth records stay restricted for 125 years. A certified copy goes only to someone with a direct and tangible interest, such as the person named, immediate family, a legal guardian or a legal representative, and you must show a current government photo ID. Details are on the DC Health vital records page.
