Getting a passport in Delaware
Delaware is small enough that a State Department passport agency is close for most residents, even though the agency itself is in Pennsylvania. Most Delawareans apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office. If you travel soon, you can book an appointment at the Philadelphia Passport Agency or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page covers 7 Delaware communities, explains each option, and shows where to get a Delaware birth certificate.
Acceptance facilities in Delaware
Acceptance facilities process first passports, passports for children and replacements for lost or stolen passports. Many work by appointment, so plan ahead. The city pages above list the facilities in each area.
Bring Form DS-11, unsigned until the agent asks, proof of U.S. citizenship such as a certified birth certificate, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. There are two fees: one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility.
The Philadelphia Passport Agency
The Philadelphia Passport Agency is the closest State Department agency for Delaware, under an hour from Wilmington and Newark. From Lewes and the beaches, it is a longer trip, and the Washington Passport Agency in DC is a similar distance. Both see applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Delaware
The Delaware Office of Vital Statistics has three offices: Dover (Jesse S. Cooper Building, 417 Federal Street), Newark (Chopin Building, 258 Chapman Road) and Georgetown (Thurman Adams State Service Center, 546 S. Bedford Street). A certified birth certificate costs $25 per copy. You can apply in person at any of the three, by mail, or online through GoCertificates or VitalChek.
On the application you state your relationship to the person named and include a copy of your photo ID. The Office of Vital Statistics holds birth records from roughly the last 72 years. Older birth records are kept by the Delaware Public Archives. Details are on the Delaware certificates page.
