Local overview

Getting a passport in Austin

Austin has no State Department agency, so an urgent trip, two weeks out or less, or a visa needed within 28 days, means an appointment in Houston (about 145 miles) or Dallas (about 180). A San Antonio agency is planned, which will be much closer once it opens. Most Austin travelers apply at an acceptance facility. UT Austin's Passport Services at 2400 Nueces St, Suite B, is open to everyone, not just students, by appointment. The Travis County District Clerk runs a passport desk at its jury office, 5325 Airport Blvd, Suite 1100, that takes walk-in applications, and books appointments downtown at 1700 Guadalupe St. For the birth certificate, the City of Austin's Office of Vital Records on the Betty Dunkerley Campus issues any Texas birth. Our pages for Round Rock, Georgetown and Lakeway cover the rest of the metro.
