Getting a passport in South Dakota

South Dakota has no State Department passport agency, and both of the nearest ones are a long drive away, so getting your papers in order early saves a lot of stress. Most South Dakotans apply for a first passport at a post office or a county office. For urgent travel you can book an out-of-state agency appointment or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. Our South Dakota city page covers Sioux Falls. Wherever you live in the state, including Rapid City and the Black Hills, you can send your documents to us by FedEx with our prepaid label.

Acceptance facilities in South Dakota

For a first passport, a passport for a child, or a replacement for a lost or stolen one, you apply in person at an acceptance facility, usually a post office or a county office in South Dakota. The Sioux Falls page above lists acceptance facilities in and around the city; for other areas, use the facility list above.

Bring Form DS-11, filled in but unsigned, a certified birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. You will pay the State Department and the facility separately.

The nearest passport agencies

From Sioux Falls and East River, the Minneapolis Passport Agency is the closest, about four hours away. From Rapid City and the Black Hills, the Colorado Passport Agency in the Denver area is nearer, though still a long trip. Both see applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.

Birth certificates in South Dakota

South Dakota makes birth certificates easy to get. Birth records from 1905 on are on a statewide system, so any county Register of Deeds office can issue a certified copy for anyone born in South Dakota, whichever county the birth was in. The state Vital Records office in Pierre also issues them. Each certified copy costs $15, and you can also order through VitalChek.

South Dakota birth records are not open to the public until they are 100 years old. You fill out an application and show a government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license. Mail requests need a photocopy of your ID. The Brown County Register of Deeds vital records page explains the statewide process.
