Local overview
Getting a passport in Durham
Durham travelers facing an urgent trip have two equally distant choices: the Charleston Passport Center, about 225 miles south, and the Washington Passport Agency, about 225 miles northeast. Both book only international travel within 14 days or foreign visas needed within 28, and a Charlotte agency is planned. For a routine first passport, the Durham Post Office at 323 E Chapel Hill St and the Research Triangle Park post office schedule passport appointments, and the Chapel Hill post office requires one. Raleigh's Westgate post office offers longer hours. Any North Carolina register of deeds can issue a North Carolina birth from 1971 on, and the Durham County Register of Deeds downtown on E Main St also holds Durham County births back to 1913. Morrisville, Cary and Raleigh have their own pages too.
