Local overview

Getting a passport in Asheville

Asheville travelers facing an urgent trip have two distant choices: the Atlanta Passport Agency, about 165 miles southwest, and the Charleston Passport Center, about 240 miles southeast. Both see applicants only when departure is within 14 days or a visa is due within 28. A Charlotte Passport Agency is planned and will be the first in North Carolina once it opens. For a routine first passport, the Downtown Asheville Post Office at 33 Coxe Ave and the Biltmore Post Office on Hendersonville Rd schedule passport appointments, and both take passport photos too. For birth certificates, any North Carolina register of deeds can issue a North Carolina birth from 1971 on, and the Buncombe County Register of Deeds on College St also holds Buncombe County births back to 1913. Hendersonville has its own page.
