Your options in Michigan

Passport acceptance facilities

If this is your first passport, your child's passport, or a replacement for one that was lost or stolen, you apply in person at an acceptance facility. In Michigan these are mostly county clerk offices and post offices, and most of them book appointments ahead. The city pages above show the options near you.

Take Form DS-11 with you but wait to sign it in front of the agent. You also need proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a certified birth certificate, a photo ID and a copy of it, and a passport photo. Plan for two payments: the passport fee to the U.S. Department of State and a separate fee to the facility.

The Detroit Passport Agency

The Detroit Passport Agency is the State Department's office for Michigan. It sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. From Grand Rapids and West Michigan, the Chicago Passport Agency is about as close. Bring proof of travel. How to book an agency appointment.

Allstate Passports & Visas

We are a private courier registered with the U.S. Department of State, not a government office. We review your documents and hand-carry your application to a passport agency, which helps if you live up north or on the west side of the state, far from Detroit. Call (800) 672-1015, text (206) 522-5995, or read about our passport services.

Birth certificates in Michigan

You can order a Michigan birth certificate from the county clerk in the county where you were born, where fees are set locally, or from the state Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics at 333 South Grand Avenue in Lansing. The state charges $34 for the search and one certified copy. Online orders go through VitalChek, the state's only authorized online provider, which adds a processing fee, plus an optional rush fee.

Detroit's own vital records office closed in 2013 and its records moved to Wayne County, so Detroit births now come from the Wayne County Clerk or the state. Michigan birth records are restricted: you can order your own, a parent named on the certificate can order a child's, and legal guardians and representatives can order with papers. You cannot order a spouse's. Details are on the Michigan vital records page.

Michigan passport questions

Is there a passport office in Michigan?

Where do I get a birth certificate if I was born in Detroit?
