Getting a passport in Wyoming
Wyoming has no State Department passport agency of its own, but Cheyenne is less than two hours from the Colorado Passport Agency in the Denver area. Most Wyomingites apply for a first passport at a post office or a county clerk's office. For urgent travel you can book an agency appointment or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page explains each option for Wyoming residents, from passport post offices to Wyoming's state-only birth certificate system.
Acceptance facilities in Wyoming
A first passport, a passport for a child or a replacement for a lost or stolen one starts with an in-person visit to an acceptance facility, usually a post office or a county clerk's office in Wyoming. Passport post offices in Cheyenne, Casper, Gillette and Rock Springs are listed above.
Bring Form DS-11 unsigned, a certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. You pay one fee to the U.S. Department of State and another to the facility.
The Colorado Passport Agency
The closest State Department agency for Wyoming is the Colorado Passport Agency in the Denver area, under two hours from Cheyenne and roughly six from Sheridan. It sees applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Wyoming
Wyoming does things differently: only the state office issues certified birth certificates, not county clerks. That office is Vital Statistics Services at 2300 Capitol Avenue, Hathaway Building, in Cheyenne, and it has records from July 1909. Each certified copy costs $25. You can order in person, by mail, or online through the state's vital records portal, which adds a small card fee, and an extra fee applies once four or more copies of the same birth certificate have been ordered over a lifetime.
Only people entitled to the record can get a certified copy, and you must include a copy of a driver's license, state ID or passport. Birth records older than 100 years are kept by the Wyoming State Archives. Details are on the CDC page for Wyoming vital records.
