Getting a passport in Tennessee
Tennessee has no State Department passport agency, so most residents apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office or a county clerk's office. For urgent travel the closest agency depends on where you live, and all of them are out of state. A registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas is another option. Acceptance facilities in Tennessee
Acceptance facilities process first passports, passports for children and replacements for lost or stolen passports. Many county clerk offices and post offices in Tennessee take passport appointments. The city pages above list the facilities in each area.
Bring Form DS-11, unsigned until the agent asks, proof of U.S. citizenship such as a certified birth certificate, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. There are two fees: one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility.

From Chattanooga, Knoxville and Nashville, the Atlanta Passport Agency is usually the closest, about two to four hours away. From Memphis, the Arkansas Passport Center in Hot Springs is closer. Birth certificates in Tennessee
Tennessee keeps it simple: a certified birth certificate costs $15 per copy, and you can get one in person at any county health department in the state, whichever county you were born in. You can also visit the Office of Vital Records at 710 James Robertson Parkway in Nashville, order by mail, or order online through VitalChek, the state's only authorized online vendor, which adds a processing fee.
The state holds birth records for the last 100 years. Older records are kept by the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Bring a valid photo ID and be ready to show your right to the record, for example as the person named or a parent listed on the certificate.
