Getting a passport in Oklahoma
Oklahoma has no State Department passport agency, so most Oklahomans apply for a first passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office or a court clerk's office. For urgent travel the nearest agencies are in Texas and Arkansas, and a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas can save you the drive. This page covers 14 Oklahoma cities, explains each option, and walks through how Oklahoma birth certificates work now, which is different from many states.
Acceptance facilities in Oklahoma
Anyone getting a first passport, a passport for a child, or a replacement for a lost or stolen one must apply in person at an acceptance facility. In Oklahoma these include many post offices and court clerk offices, some by appointment. The city pages above list the facilities in each area.
Have these ready: Form DS-11, unsigned until the agent asks, a certified birth certificate as proof of citizenship, a photo ID with a photocopy, and one passport photo. You pay twice, once to the U.S. Department of State and once to the facility.
The nearest passport agencies
From Oklahoma City and Lawton, the Dallas Passport Agency is the closest, about three hours from Oklahoma City. From Tulsa, Dallas and the Arkansas Passport Center in Hot Springs are a similar drive. Agencies see applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
Birth certificates in Oklahoma
Oklahoma birth certificates come from the Oklahoma State Department of Health, which has records from October 1908. The $15 search fee includes one certified copy, and each extra copy is also $15. You order online or by phone, where Oklahoma residents pay a $5 convenience fee and can add a $20 expedite fee, or by mail.
If you want to collect the certificate yourself, Oklahoma uses will call: you place the order online, then pick up the certificate in person at the state office in Oklahoma City, at the Goodwin Health Center in Tulsa, or at the Pittsburg County Health Department in McAlester. Birth records are not public, so only qualified applicants with a government photo ID can order. The Tulsa Health Department birth records page explains will call.
