Getting a passport in Alabama
Alabama has no State Department passport agency, but getting the paperwork ready is easier here than in many states, because any county health department can print your birth certificate while you wait. Most Alabamians apply for a first passport at a post office or a probate office. For urgent travel you can book an agency appointment in a neighboring state or use a registered courier such as Allstate Passports & Visas. This page covers 28 Alabama cities and explains each option.
Acceptance facilities in Alabama
If you need a first passport, a passport for a child, or a replacement for one that was lost or stolen, you go in person to an acceptance facility. Many probate offices and post offices in Alabama handle passports, some by appointment. Your city page above shows the facilities nearby.
Bring Form DS-11 completed but unsigned, a certified birth certificate as proof of citizenship, a photo ID and a photocopy, and one passport photo. You will make two payments, one to the U.S. Department of State and one to the facility.
The nearest passport agencies
For Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and East Alabama, the Atlanta Passport Agency is the closest, about two and a half hours from Birmingham. From Mobile and the Gulf Coast, the New Orleans Passport Center is nearer. Both see applicants by appointment only, and only if they travel internationally within 14 days or need a foreign visa within 28 days. How to book an agency appointment.
