Birth certificates in West Virginia
The West Virginia Vital Registration Office has birth records from 1917, and a certified copy costs $12. The fastest way to get one is in person: the office at 350 Capitol Street, Room 165, in Charleston offers same-day walk-in service. Mail orders take about one to three weeks, and VitalChek is the only online and phone service the office approves. For births before 1917, check with the county clerk in the county of birth.
Certified copies go to the person named, parents, grandparents, a spouse, children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters, or someone with a legal interest, and you must show ID. Details are on the West Virginia Vital Registration certificate requests page.
